British Values

Promoting Fundamental British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education, we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is "right" and "wrong", all people living in England are subject to its law.

The key values are:

  • democracy
  • rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect
  • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

British Values Linked towards our Catholic Values and Social teaching

Our curriculum intent reinforces our focus on Catholic Social Teaching, and aims to provide our children with the skills to become transformative members of society. Our Gospel Values basis reinforces British Values. We build the Kingdom through our curriculum…

British values at Holy Souls

At Holy Souls, British values are part of how we live and learn together. Guided by our mission, “Love one another, as I have loved you,” we help pupils understand these values and put them into practice in school and in the wider community.

Democracy

Democracy means that people have a voice and can take part in decisions that affect them. At Holy Souls, pupils are encouraged to share their views, listen to others and contribute to decisions in class and across the school. Through opportunities such as class discussions and pupil leadership, they learn that decisions should be made fairly and that everyone’s contribution matters.

The Rule of Law

The rule of law means that rules and laws help keep people safe, protect their rights and support a fair society. At Holy Souls, pupils learn what our school rules are and why they matter. We encourage them to take responsibility for their choices, understand that actions have consequences and recognise the importance of laws in protecting everyone.

Individual Liberty

Individual liberty means having the freedom to make choices and express our views, while respecting the rights and safety of others. At Holy Souls, pupils are supported to make responsible choices, develop confidence and speak up appropriately. They learn that freedom comes with responsibility, and that everyone should be able to feel safe and respected.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect means treating others with kindness and consideration, recognising that every person has dignity and worth. At Holy Souls, we encourage pupils to treat others as they would wish to be treated, work cooperatively and value the contributions of those around them. Our Catholic ethos calls us to love and care for one another in our words and actions.

Tolerance

Tolerance means respecting people whose faith, beliefs, cultures or backgrounds may differ from our own. At Holy Souls, pupils learn about different faiths and cultures, listen to a range of viewpoints and explore the diversity within our community and wider society. We encourage pupils to approach differences with curiosity, understanding and respect.
