Holy Souls Forest school takes place in our very own mini forest at the bottom of our playground. It is used in all weathers, and children love getting muddy whilst learning.
Mrs Akehurst, who is our Forest School Leader, takes one class each term, in years 3, 4 and 5, one afternoon a week down to the forest school with another member of the forest school staff. On the last forest group session, the whole class joins Mrs Akehurst for the fire session. The children get to enjoy toasting marshmallows and drinking hot chocolate or warm squash.
All classes from Tiddly Tots to Year 6 use the forest school at various points throughout the academic year.
There are many benefits of outdoor learning and these include supporting children to develop a love of nature, environmental awareness and communication skills as well as positive health benefits, both mentally and physically. Exploration and supported risk-taking builds confidence and self-esteem in a natural setting.
