Solar Panels—Laudato-Si Interview with the Headteacher
June 2026
As a group of children that are focused on spreading the message from Pope Francis and Pope Leo about ‘looking after our common home’, we decided to think about renewable energy. We were told that our school has Solar Panels!
We had a meeting about it and looked on Google Maps to see the panels, and we even walked around outside to see them.
We decided to interview Mrs Ellison and ask her some questions about them. We each thought of a question and then we had our meeting.
When did you choose to have solar panels and why? Was it part of a grant/scheme?
In 2023, Salford Diocese gave the school a grant to buy either LED lighting for the building or solar panels which would help ‘our common home’, school electricity budget, and would only use resources that were naturally free. As school already had |LED lighting,, we opted for the solar panels which were put on the hall roof by a special solar panel company.
Why didn’t we get the solar panels sooner?
Because the school couldn't afford to buy solar panels without the help from a grant.
Why do we use solar panels?
They generate free electricity from the sun’s light which we can use in school. It saves us using other fuel sources that damage our world.
What happens on a cloudy day or at night time?
Even when it is cloudy, the sun’s light is still there so the panels use that but at night there is no light and they stop working until light appears again.
What can our school do next to be environmentally friendly?
We would like to get EV chargers for the staff car park but we need to wait to see how we can go about doing that.
